Premiering her new album at MIJF 2023, Perica’s dynamic and exhilarating 18-piece ensemble features some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians – hailing from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth – and including Jamie Oehlers, Julien Wilson, Ben Vanderwal, Mat Jodrell and Andrea Keller. Vanessa Perica is an award-winning composer, arranger and conductor based in Melbourne, Australia. Now she teams up with the Bergen Big Band and comes to USF Verftet, Thursday 7 September, to play music from her critically acclaimed debut "Love is a Temporary Madness".

The album reached number one on the AIR Independent Charts and number three on the ARIA Jazz & Blues Charts. The album was also nominated for the prestigious Australian Music Prize and the AIR Independent Record Awards. Other career highlights include the APRA Art Music Award and the Australian Jazz Bell Award (2021) for 'Work of the Year'.

Vanessa has previously collaborated with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra where she composed and arranged for performances at the iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Hamer Hall. She was also a finalist in the 2021 Australian Women in Music Awards for the 'Emerging Artist Award', and has performed at the Perth, Sydney and Melbourne International Jazz Festivals.

Bergen Big Band has been one of the country's most active and versatile big bands for over 30 years, and has had a number of exciting musical collaborations and commissioned works in recent years. Last year BBB played new music by Knut Vaage at the Bergen Festival and in 2021 they had great success with the music that saxophonist Marius Neset wrote for the big band. Now they have drawn inspiration from Australia, and are ready for new musical challenges together with Vanessa Perica.

The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting original live jazz performance by established and emerging artists in Melbourne.

About the concert

Their performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall features 30 leading contemporary jazz musicians from around the country, with some of the most-respected figures in Australian jazz – Mike Nock, Paul Grabowsky, Andrea Keller, Barney McAll, Sandy Evans, Scott Tinkler, Julien Wilson, Stephen Magnusson and more.

A specially formed 18-piece Orchestra conducted by Vanessa Perica, will premiere Jumping Yaks, a four-part suite commissioned by Paul Grabowsky, and inspired by Beethoven’s 7th. Symphony, alongside works by Erkki Veltheim, Eugene Ball, Erik Griswold, and Niko Schauble.

The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative’s 40 years of continuous concert presentations has included 24 years at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, founding the Melbourne Women’s Jazz Festival in 1997, and introducing jazz concerts into the Melbourne Festival. Vanessa Perica is a Melbourne based composer, arranger, conductor who is rapidly gaining an international reputation as a jazz composer of the highest order.

She was a finalist in both the Anonimus Big Band (2018) and ‘Scrivere in Jazz’ International Composition Competitions (2020) she has also appeared at the Sydney, Melbourne and Perth International Jazz Festivals.

With the support of Australia Council Vanessa recorded her debut album ‘Love is a Temporary Madness’ with an all-star line-up released (February 2020) to critical acclaim, reaching number 1 on the AIR Independent charts, number 3 on the ARIA Jazz charts, nominated in the Australian Music Prize and AIR Awards, and winner ‘Best Jazz Album’ at the 2020 Music Victoria Awards.

After witnessing the February 2021 performance of ‘Love is a Temporary Madness’ as a Symphonic Suite, premiered by Vanessa and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, her collaboration with the ANJO Youth Big Band is sure to be a festival highlight.

The ANJO Youth Big Band brings together our brightest and youngest jazz stars, aged 18 - 25, from across the nation. Entry to the ANJO Youth Big Band is by competitive, blindfold audition with the successful candidates travelling to Sydney for a week-long intensive with the special guest artist in preparation for this concert.

The Melbourne International Jazz Festival together with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra present a spectacular international collaboration to open the 2021 Festival.

In a joyful celebration of the MIJF's return to the Hamer Hall stage, this performance features arrangements by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's Christopher Crenshaw (USA) and Melbourne's own Vanessa Perica.

The stellar musicians of the MSO will be joined on stage by the Vanessa Perica Orchestra and an all-star lineup of Australian vocalists including Kate Ceberano, Vince Jones, Michelle Nicolle, Harry James Angus, Kylie Auldist, Thando and Emma Donovan with MC Eddie Perfect.
